...Whose I Am

Anchor Scripture: Romans 8:1, 38–39

“There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus…”

One of the greatest battles every believer will face is not the battle against sin. It is the battle over identity. The enemy's greatest weapon has never really been temptation; it has always been deception. If he can make us forget whose we are, he can keep us distracted from why we're here.

That is why Romans 8 is such a beautiful chapter. It begins with, "There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus," and ends with the assurance that nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus. Everything in between is simply an unfolding of one truth: You belong to God.

From Prisoners to Children

The cross did far more than forgive our sins. Jesus didn't simply pay our debt and leave us to figure life out on our own. Through His death and resurrection, we were adopted into God's family. We are no longer merely people whose sins have been forgiven. We are sons and daughters. That changes everything.

We no longer obey God because we are trying to earn His love. We obey because we already have it. We no longer live trying to prove ourselves. We live from acceptance, not for acceptance.

When Life Doesn't Make Sense

What happens when life becomes difficult? Most believers have experienced seasons where familiar scriptures suddenly become deeply personal. We know God is good, but in suffering we begin to ask: Does He still see me? Can he really help me? These questions don't necessarily mean our faith is weak, sometimes they are evidence that our faith is growing.

Faith is not pretending life is easy. Faith is choosing to trust God's character even when we don't understand His methods. As our relationship with Him grows, we begin to realise that every season reveals another dimension of who He is. He is not only our Saviour. He is our Father, our Comforter, our Shepherd and our Strength.

Working Out Salvation

What did Paul mean when he said,

"Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling"

Notice he didn't say work for your salvation. He said work it out. The very next verse explains why:

"For it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure"

Salvation is God's work from beginning to end. We don't spend our lives trying to earn what Jesus has already finished. Instead, we allow what God has placed within us to be expressed through the way we live.

Don't Let Sin Become the Distraction

This doesn't make sin unimportant. Far from it. But many believers become so consumed with trying not to sin that we never fully step into God's purpose for our lives. The enemy is happy when our entire Christian experience revolves around guilt, shame and endless self-examination, because distracted believers rarely fulfil purpose.

Yes, we should repent and yes, we should pursue holiness, but our eyes must remain fixed on Christ, not constantly on our failures. God didn't save us merely to keep us out of hell. He saved us so our lives could reveal Him on the earth.

In All Things... 

Romans 8 doesn't promise that everything that happens to us will be good. Rather, it promises that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose.

Life will happen. There will be seasons of waiting, disappointment, grief and unanswered questions. But as we continue walking with God, something else happens. We grow, our capacity grows and our faith deepens. We discover that God has been faithful too many times for us to stop trusting Him now.

...Whose I Among

Perhaps this is the greatest lesson of Romans 8.

Before asking ‘Who am I?’, scripture first answers a more important question: Whose am I? I belong to Christ. I have been justified. I have been adopted. I am led by His Spirit. Nothing can separate me from His love.

This identity becomes the foundation for everything else. We no longer spend our lives trying to become accepted by God but we live as people who already are because we know whose we are, we can walk confidently into the purpose for which He has called us.

Reflection

What has been shaping your identity lately? Has it been your failures, your successes, your circumstances... or the truth that you belong to God? Perhaps today is an invitation to stop striving for acceptance and start living from it. Because there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus . And nothing can separate you from His love.
